Cloves are the dried flower buds of the clove tree (Syzygium aromaticum), a tropical evergreen tree native to Indonesia. The dried buds are popularly used as a spice in cooking, as well as in traditional medicine and aromatherapy.
Cloves can be used as a spice in cooking or brewed into tea. They can also be used in aromatherapy or applied topically to the skin as a natural remedy for pain or inflammation. But, be careful not to apply pure clove oil to your skin, as it will cause irritation.
For centuries, clove has been used for the preservation of food. At one point, it was more common to use cloves to keep meat from spoiling than it was to use them as a flavoring.
Cloves are an important ingredient in incense and are often used during Yule for decoration, notably in Pomanders.
