About this piece

Slow Smoke, Small Bundle

A hand-tied bundle of desert sage, roughly 4 inches long and half an inch thick, wrapped in cotton twine. Lit and blown out, it holds a low smolder and gives off a dry, resinous, faintly bitter smoke.

The size is the point. A full-size wand is more than most workings need and tends to sit half-burned in a dish for months. This one is sized to a single session.

Specifications

  • Plant: desert sage
  • Size: approximately 4 in long, 0.5 in diameter
  • Binding: cotton twine
  • Sold: individually, one bundle
  • Reusable: yes, extinguish and relight across several sessions

Color runs from pale yellow-green to deeper green-brown depending on when and where the plant was cut. Every bundle is a little different. That is a harvest, not a defect.

How to burn it

  1. Hold it over a heat-safe dish. Ceramic, stone, or cast iron.
  2. Light one end and let the flame catch for a few seconds.
  3. Blow the flame out. You want an ember, not a fire.
  4. Let the smoke do the work. Open a window or a door so there is somewhere for it to go.
  5. To stop, press the lit end firmly into the dish until the ember dies. Do not use water, which soaks the bundle and ruins the rest of it.

Check it twice after you think it is out. Bundles hold heat well past the point where they look extinguished.

Working with it

  • Clear a room or a working surface before you begin
  • Pass a tool, a charm, or a piece of jewelry through the smoke
  • Close a session deliberately, the way a bell closes one
  • Walk a boundary, along a threshold or the perimeter of a space

Why Artemisia

Desert sage belongs to Artemisia, the same genus as mugwort and wormwood. That family has been burned, hung, and carried in European folk practice for a very long time: mugwort bound into midsummer fires and worn at the waist, wormwood hung in doorways, both of them turning up again and again in the herbals wherever something needed clearing rather than drawing.

The aroma tells you they are related. It is dry and bitter and green, nothing like a culinary sage.

Care

Store dry. Damp bundles will not hold an ember and can mold at the core where you cannot see it. Keep it out of a bathroom or anywhere that gets steam.

Safety

Burn only over a heat-safe dish, on a stable surface, away from flammable materials. Never leave a burning bundle unattended. Ventilate the room.

Do not burn near birds. Birds have respiratory systems that make smoke of any kind dangerous to them, well before it bothers anyone else in the room. Use caution around anyone with asthma or smoke sensitivity, and keep away from children and pets.

Not for consumption.
