About this piece

A Small Iron Anchor for the Working Flame

Heavy cast iron, 1.25 inches tall and 1 inch wide, with a raised pentacle on the face. Built to hold a chime candle upright and steady for the length of a burn.

Chime candles are the workhorse of spell work: small, fast, and meant to burn all the way down in a single sitting. They also tip easily. This holder gives one a base that will not move, made from the one material folk practice has always reached for when something needed to hold.

Specifications

  • Material: cast iron
  • Size: 1.25 in high, 1 in wide
  • Fits: chime candles measuring 0.53 to 0.57 in thick
  • Design: raised pentacle
  • Sold: individually, one holder

Check your candle diameter first

This holder is sized for standard chime candles between 0.53 and 0.57 inches thick. Chime candles vary by maker, and a candle outside that range will not seat correctly. Measure yours before ordering.

Why iron

In Celtic tradition, iron repelled harmful spirits and was buried at property boundaries. Norse practice drove iron bundles into bed frames and doorposts. Slavic households opened iron scissors beneath thresholds. Different peoples, no shared language, the same conclusion: iron, forged from raw ore, holds authority over wild forces.

A cast iron base is a practical object first. It is also the oldest protective material in European folk practice, doing quiet work underneath whatever you light on top of it.

Working with it

  • Set a dressed chime candle in the holder and light it where it can burn down completely
  • Place it at the center of a bowl working, or at the four quarters if you are working with several
  • Set one on a windowsill or beside a threshold for boundary work
  • Keep one at your working surface as a permanent fixture rather than a single-use base

Care

Cast iron will rust with prolonged moisture. Wipe clean and dry; do not soak. Let wax cool fully, then lift it out or warm the holder briefly to release the remainder. The surface darkens and takes on character with use, which is the point of iron.

Pairs with

Safety

Cast iron conducts heat and the holder will be hot while a candle burns and for some time after. Place it on a stable, heat-safe surface away from flammable materials. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep away from children and pets. Candle not included.
